What you're about to hear is a recording of my live keynote from the inaugural Ripple Festival in Melbourne in November 2025. This was captured by the excellent Steph Hanson Productions, and I really hope you enjoy hearing my take on how to make [00:02:00] business easier and still make money. I'm gonna ask the same question that I asked yesterday, and I hope you've got it, the right answer for me today.
Who identifies as a hot bitch? Ask again. Who identifies as a hot bitch? That's more like it. Okay, now I'm on the stage, I'm like, "What was I gonna s-say again?" So I wanna talk to you today about how to make business easier and still make money. So who would like business to be a little easier? Hmm, I don't see all the hands up.
What? Okay, everybody. Thank God. Otherwise, I could just stop now. So I still remember the moment that I fell in love with small business. I was eight years old, and I was working in the... Ooh, am I making the sound go weird there? I was working in the ice cream van [00:03:00] at the school fete, and I was, like, taking orders and, like, handing out the change and giving people ice cream with, like, chocolate and sprinkles.
And I was like, "This is the best thing I've ever done." And then one of the teachers had to tap me on the back and be like, "Fi, um, somebody else wants to have a turn, too." And I was like, "This is so cool." I just loved everything about it. Like, just somebody wants something, and I can give it to them. And it was just this, you know, just exhilarating thing to be able to do as an eight-year-old.
But now I've been in small business for a long time, I know that we are really good at making it hard. Who makes business hard?
So that guy is mopping the ocean. And that's what we do in small business every day. [00:04:00] And you know, that idea of small business that I fell in love with when I was eight years old, I didn't know then that small business was gonna become, in my mind, this incredible tool for economic empowerment. And you think about what the Internet has done to the democratization of being able to be self-employed.
We can do anything, but we're fucking mopping the ocean every day, making things so goddamn hard. And it makes me really pissed off because I believe in small business so much, and I just want us to be-- start doing things the easy way So who's a Schitt's Creek fan? Best. I should really watch it again. I hear people talk sometimes about how they don't have a business plan, like they should be congratulated for that.
It's like, okay, sis, cool. You don't have a business plan. Okay, that's all right. Um, but if you don't have some kind [00:05:00] of vision of what you wanna do in the future, where the hell are you going? Like, we need to actually have some sort of imagination in our mind about where it is that we wanna take our small business.
And I actually think that we get way too caught up in how we're gonna do it before we've even decided what it is that we want to do. So if Mia and I had known what was ahead of us a year ago, we would not have done this. But our vision was so strong, and we really did spend a lot more time building the vision in our imagination than we did...
I mean, of course we had a plan, and we've executed it, but, like, that vision has to be so strong in your mind. And I would encourage you to spend, like, ten times as much energy building the image in your mind of what you want to create, ten times as much energy and effort on that, as how you're [00:06:00] gonna do it.
My mouth's gone dry. I've got stage anxiety mouth, so I'm just gonna have a little sip of water. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves
Thank you. I'm actually okay with being anxious on stage. I'm, uh, just human like all of you guys. So Another horse reference. Um, actually, I have to tell you a secret. You know how Tom Ballard was, like, joking about how he couldn't go on that horse ride? It's their horse ranch.
They're clients of mine, and animal welfare is very important. I wouldn't be able to go on one of your horses either. So when I talk about this vision, I feel like sometimes what happens is we get so caught up in whatever this idea that we have about how it's all gonna happen, and we hang on so [00:07:00] tight to the reins of this plan that we've made, and we're still hanging on to the reins.
And it's like, you know, when you get in the car and Google or whatever map thing you use, it's like straight ahead, and you're like, it's a fucking brick wall. And like, what do you do? But that's what we do in our businesses is we, like, keep following the GPS in the car, even though it has no idea where we're supposed to be going.
So we need to have the vision be stronger than the plan, because the plan is not gonna be what you think it is And what I want us to consider is that it's more important to be obsessed with getting it right than being right. Who's got an ego? Everyone. We all have egos. And I have seen so many small business owners get so stuck in this, "I'm right.
I'm right. This idea that I had 30 years ago was right, and I know I was right, [00:08:00] and I'm just gonna keep trying to drive towards that brick wall." But actually, being humble enough to be more interested in getting it right than being right is the sign of an incredible business owner who is going to be successful.
Good Money Club Ad
I'm gonna guess that you are a small business owner who really cares about making money and impact. Me too. It's why I designed Good Money Club, which is a place for female small business owners to come together and learn about financial literacy, how to make and manage more money, and how to think differently about money so that you get different results.
We talk about money every single week, and I promise you, it doesn't feel gross. The more you learn about money, the more you immerse yourself into the kind of strategies that work for small business owners. You are gonna see yourself feel calm with money, and that is gonna lead to you [00:09:00] making more revenue, paying yourself more, and really thinking about money in a whole different way that feels good.
Check out the link in the show notes to find out more about Good Money Club, and we would love to have you in there. When we think about a shovel, what do we think? Tell me the words that come to mind when we say the word shovel.
Dirt.
Dig. Dig. Hard work. Hard work. Ooh, I got one. Shit. Shit. Heat. Heat. Hips. No. No. Pits. Pits. Like- Oh. Oh. Those pits? Holes. Digging a hole. Sweat hard. Shit. Sorry if I misunderstood you. Carrie. I know how to say your name. What do we think about when [00:10:00] I say the word money?
Cool fans.
Anything else? Freida. Freida
Avocados. Yeah, yeah. Okay. You can keep going all day with the money stuff if you want to. Keep talking about it in the dance break. I want to tell you about three things that you can do with a shovel or with money. You could dig a hole, you could plant a tree, or you could kill someone. Yeah. We don't blame the shovel and you can't blame the money either.
Money is an amplifier of who you already are, and so many good people are scared of money because they see it as evil or difficult or paying school fees. Who'd want [00:11:00] to make more money just to pay it to the fucking school fees? So we've got to see money as a tool for amplifying who we already are. And whether you like money or not, it is part of business.
So if you want to be a successful business owner, you have to learn to love money Why'd you have to go make things so complicated? Oh. I don't know the other words Would anybody else like to join overcomplicated synonymous with me? I've overcomplicated everything about this just all. And then re-redid it all.
So here's a couple of examples of what being overcomplicated is in business. Um, everything is bespoke. We work with everybody. Um, I have no boundaries. I work seven days a week. You can just book a call with me any old time. I have no idea who my target market [00:12:00] is. I just work with anyone. I do anything for them and, um, yeah, if you wanna work with me, just give me a call
Sorry if anybody seems like I just said that directly to you. So what does it look like to keep things really simple? So who wants to be successful in business? I fucking hope you're all gonna put your hands up. Otherwise, this last year of building this festival was a bit of a waste. So the best way to be successful, and when I say successful, I mean to be able to execute your mission, whatever your mission is, and to be able to have enough money to do the things that you want to do.
Keeping it simple is the way to do it. It's really hard. Like, being-- making things simple is the hardest thing that we can do. But here's a few ways that you might consider making things more simple for yourself. Just have one [00:13:00] type of client that you serve. Wow. Is anyone like, "Well, fuck off, Fi. That's not-- You can't do that."
"I've got, like, fourteen different types of clients that I work with, thank you very much." So work with one type of client. Is anyone's brain going, "Well, I could never do that"? Okay. The bigger your-- the longer you've been in business, the more target markets you can serve. But especially if you're in your first five years, just focus on one type of client and get really, really good at talking to them and solving their problems and meeting their desires.
If possible, you're not gonna believe this, just one product. Is anyone just selling one thing? Oh my God, Kate is. Kelly is. Erica is. Nat is. A few other people. [00:14:00] So imagine how simple your business could be if you sold one thing to one type of client, and you did it in a fucking extraordinary way. Because you could get so good at doing that thing that everybody would want to work with you.
That is how we make things simple. The other thing that we really need to work out is who's coming with me? So a lot of the leaders on this stage have spoken to this topic. Water break
We need to be more interested in what types of people we need beside us than we are about skills. You can learn skills. Skills come from knowledge and experience and doing stuff, but character is something that is about a person. So what I want you to be thinking about is what type of [00:15:00] people complement me.
So this might come as a bit of a surprise because I've just organized a major festival, but I'm really disorganized and a bit chaotic. So I need somebody really calm and grounded to work with me because I'm an ideas girl and I need somebody who's an executor. Not to kill people, but- So thinking about what kind of skills might complement your own rather than worrying so much about what exactly it is they're gonna be doing for you Like I said before, we all have egos, right?
It's just part of being a human. But who's trying to do everything themselves? Yeah. Lots of people are still doing everything themselves. Is it because nobody else can do it as well as you? It might be on a deep level, that might be part of it. Your ego is gonna be so good at telling you, "Nobody else can do it as [00:16:00] well as I can," but it's wrong.
So you need to work out who's gonna help you actually achieve your mission. And that might start with hiring somebody five hours a week and building up from there
I'm almost out of time, but we're gonna do this really quickly. So remember how I talked about the vision and how important having the vision is? We're gonna do a little exercise together, and you can't get it wrong. There is no wrong, so overachievers anonymous, it's okay. I want you to close your eyes, and I just want you to listen to what I'm saying and think about what comes into your mind So it's the thirteenth of November, twenty twenty-eight.
That's exactly three years from today, I think You are celebrating something really [00:17:00] amazing in your business. Something absolutely wild has happened, and I want you to think about, how am I celebrating it? Who's with me? Do we have food or drinks in our hands? Are we dancing? Are we horseback riding? Are we in a different country?
Where are we celebrating this really exciting moment? I want you to really think about the visual aspects of what's happening. You might be celebrating this milestone on a stage. You might be celebrating it with a, an Instagram post. It might be a trip to Italy, and I want you to visualize what is happening at this celebration.
Now, I want you to work backwards and think about: What am I celebrating? What are we celebrating? And why is that so important to me? [00:18:00] What does this celebration or this milestone or this big moment, what does it mean to me? What does it mean to my business? And I want you to hold on to that vision. I'm gonna ask you to open your eyes now.
And once the speeches are over and we have some music to enjoy, I want you to tell the people around you what was your vision, what were you celebrating, who was with you, and what were you doing, or whatever you remembered from that exercise. So that is the end of my talk. Thank you.
