So how are you going to actually get yourself talking out loud with a trusted person to actually get clear about what are the results that you want to manifest or generate when you pair? Really intentional thoughts with action. Taking the world is your oyster.

Today's Money Secrets. A podcast episode is going to be a little bit different. For those of you who haven't met me, I am Fee Johnston. I'm a chartered accountant. I'm a business strategist and a money coach. And I am obsessed with small business and its power to change the world for the better. Today I wanna talk about manifesting.
Now this might be a little bit of an unexpected topic for me, uh, to be talking about. If you don't know me, if you [00:02:00] do know me, and, um, I'm also giving you the chance to get to know me a little bit better. Right now, I am a little bit woo and a lot do so. I think there's a lot of coaches and a lot of content creators out there who talk a lot about the power of manifesting.
If we go back a couple of decades, we can talk about The Secret, which was a book and a movie. Which really kind of gripped the world. It was a a different time in the world. The internet certainly wasn't what it is now. It was certainly not the first book or movie that had talked about manifesting or the power of really being in control of your thoughts.
This is something that has been in the personal development space for decades. I'd say it probably started in around the 1970s, but that's just a guess. So in the personal development world for, you know, a really long [00:03:00] time, people have, you know, broached this topic of how to get what you want through manifesting or your thoughts.
So I wanna talk about how manifesting works in a small business lens. So just in case you need a little bit of context, I've been working with small business owners for 25 years. I've been a small business owner for 15 years, and I've worked with thousands of business owners and their money. So I think I've got a lot of insight into this particular topic of manifesting.
Now, the first thing that I wanna do is talk about how I see manifesting. So this idea that you can think about something you want and then all of a sudden the universe drops it into your lap. Is not my experience or my observation. I think a lot of the people who are perhaps a little bit new to [00:04:00] business would like that to be the case and shit, wouldn't we all?
It would be amazing just to kind of think about something and then all of a sudden it sort of falls out of the universe onto your lap. But I think those of us who've been around a little bit longer know that that is not reality. So let's talk about how manifesting can be reality. So this idea of manifesting essentially, is that you decide on what you want and then you keep talking about the fact that you want that thing.
Some people use journals. Some people do little mantras that they say out loud. Some people have particular music or meditation that they listen to that supports this idea of manifesting whatever this thing is that they want to receive. And so you can manifest in lots of different ways. You can manifest in a very spiritual way.
I'm sure you can do it in a religious way if you're that way inclined. I'm not. You can manifest in the sense of [00:05:00] using modern technology to help you stay on top of whatever it is that you are trying to manifest. There is actually some neuroscience out there, and if you haven't heard of her before then I highly recommend you go and check out Dr.
Tara Swart. She is absolutely amazing. She's a neuroscientist and a content creator. She's written a few books and she's just so knowledgeable about really tricky topics like manifesting and gut instinct and things that seem so ethereal. And her take on manifesting absolutely aligns with my observation and my experience as a business owner.
And that is that manifesting does work. And the reason it works is because every time you say the things, so let's say you are, you want to manifest a hundred thousand dollars in revenue this year. So you [00:06:00] want this a hundred thousand dollars year. So the first part of what makes this powerful in my opinion, is that you now have clarity about what you want.
You cannot manifest or bring something to life without knowing what it is. And in my opinion, this is the most powerful part of manifesting is clarity. I'm gonna come back to that later. But what Dr. Tara Swartz says is that once you make that statement, the more often you make that statement, either in your mind or by writing it down or typing it or saying it, whatever your, um, medium or method is.
You actually are looking for opportunities to make that happen. So in the example that you say out loud that you wanna make a hundred thousand dollars in revenue, if you keep saying that to yourself every day, you will start to see and notice different things in the world that are going to get you closer [00:07:00] to that a hundred thousand dollars.
It's kind of like if you get a white Toyota Corolla, now you see white Toyota Corollas all over the road. You know our brains are very good at pattern recognition, and so you could have ignored all of the white Toyota Corollas on the road for the 15 years before you got one, but now you have one. All of a sudden you can see them everywhere.
It's the same thing with this concept of manifesting. Once you decide that you wanna make a hundred thousand dollars a year, you then start to see opportunities to make a hundred thousand dollars a year. Everywhere you start to think about yourself differently, you start to present yourself differently.
You start to show up differently, you, you might start doing things like marketing yourself more. You might start networking more. You might start doing more business development, and you are actively doing things that you can see are going to get you closer to this goal of a hundred thousand [00:08:00] dollars in revenue.
So that's what the neuroscience says according to Dr. Tara Swart, who I believe is a world expert on this topic. That manifesting is not just about thinking something and then it's just going to happen. It's actually a process of thinking multiple times, like you don't just think at once and now it's real, but it's about thinking the same thought many times over.
And then your brain's starting to notice different things in the world. You start to notice, uh, you hear things that you didn't hear before. You see things that you didn't see before. You start to think in a different way. When you are focused on getting towards a goal, you will start taking action towards that goal.

And that takes me to the second part of manifesting, which is that manifesting doesn't work just by thinking we need to act. And so in my opinion and my observation over the last 25 years is that. When you pair really intentional thoughts or thought work or mantras, or meditations, or however you wanna say it, when you pair that with action, taking [00:10:00] the world is your oyster, right?
Action taking is things like picking up the phone and calling that client and asking them if they've got any work for you. Creating the social media post and putting it out into the world. It's going to the networking event. It's going to the networking event, and actively putting yourself out there and amongst business owners or whatever your crowd is that are going to get you closer to that goal of a hundred thousand dollars in revenue.
It's actions like thinking about, okay, well if I wanna get to a hundred thousand dollars this year, how am I going to do that? That's something that we love doing in Good Money Club is working out how do I actually reach my goal? So I've done the thinking part. I've worked out that I want to get to a hundred thousand dollars, now I need to work out how I'm going to do that and what steps I'm going to actually take in the world or on my computer that are going to actually [00:11:00] get me closer to this a hundred thousand dollars revenue point.
So thoughts plus action. Creates results, and this is again, a really big part of what we are working on every single month in Good Money Club is trying to align the thoughts, behaviors, and actions and results that we wanna have in relation to our money and our businesses. Now I wanna touch on that other part, which is clarity.
This is something that I think a lot of people overlook or perhaps misunderstand about this concept of manifesting, is that you can't just sit there in a room alone and manifest something that you are not crystal clear about. And I want you to be thinking about how do I get clear about what it is that I want?
And in my experience, the best way to get clear about what you want is to say it out loud. Preferably with [00:12:00] another person. This is why coaching and mentoring is so powerful because. Getting your thoughts out loud and into the world is a great way for a lot of people. So a lot of people are oral processes.
I definitely am. So I work out what I think about something by talking about it, and there's a lot of people in the world like that. We need to speak out loud to another person in order to get our thoughts really clear so that we can then have clarity. A lot of us don't give ourselves that gift. We sit alone in our room or in our spare bedroom, working on the computer constantly trying to get towards some kind of unknown goal, rather than actually stepping back and saying, well, sure, I believe in the power of manifesting and I want to manifest something incredible, but I need to work out what it is first.
So how are you going to actually get yourself [00:13:00] talking out loud with a trusted person? To actually get clear about what are the results that you want to manifest or generate? Do you want to get to a hundred thousand dollars in revenue? Great. Now that you are clear about that, you can start looking for signs from the universe or being more active, whatever you know works for you.
As long as you are taking actions towards this goal of a hundred thousand dollars, you are going to get closer to it than you would have if, number one, you weren't clear about it. Number two, you weren't intentional about it, and number three, you weren't taking action towards the goal. So I believe that manifesting is a real thing.
It starts with clarity of thought. It then builds when you are really intentional about what your goal is that you are trying to manifest. But it is only [00:14:00] possible through action making the phone call, creating the social media posts, getting in the room, putting yourself out there, doing some thinking time about how you can best serve your clients.
If your goal is to grow your Instagram account, work out what number of followers you wanna grow it to, and then map out a plan as to how you are actually going to do that. I also wanna put forward an idea that manifesting can be, you know, you can manifest using a lot of different mediums. For example, a spreadsheet is absolutely a manifesting tool.
Having a spreadsheet in front of you, like the tools that I build in Good Money Club, and there are actually some free tools on my website too, which will pop in the show notes. But having a tool, like an Excel spreadsheet to help you map out what it is that you want to achieve is absolutely a manifesting tool.
So is a vision board, so is a [00:15:00] notebook or a whiteboard on the wall. You can manifest by singing. I actually give this tip to my Good Money Club members a lot, which is that sometimes it feels unnatural to say our mantras or meditations or our manifesting thoughts out loud, but sometimes if we sing it to ourselves, it actually hits a different part of our brain, and that can be really fun or it can make the goal that you have in mind seem.
I don't know, a little bit less serious perhaps. I often sing to myself, and I find that when I'm singing, I'm in a different head space, a different mood, and it's sort of hitting in a different part of my body than speaking is. So yeah, there's lots of ways to manifest a spreadsheet, a vision board, a whiteboard.
But manifesting only works when you get clear about what you wanna achieve and then you take action towards it. I really hope this episode has been [00:16:00] fun and I wanna hear from you.
